Here is my new loom, all laid out on the kitchen table. It’s been oiled today with Danish Oil (there were a bewildering number of oils at Conways; I choose this one as we have been watching the third series of The Killing – it seemed as good a reason as any) and so tomorrow I will put it all together and start weaving. Can’t wait 🙂
Dom is the recipient of the Smithy Studios Graduate prize and has been working at our studios since September. She graduated in Three Dimensional design last summer and her degree show featured these stunning pots, some with wooden lids, all with exceptional use of glazing both externally and within her pots.
Dominika’s work includes bowls from £20, pots from £30 and shot cups at £30.
Dominka has been working at the Studios and so, for the first time, we have a potters wheel in use.
Dom’s website is here.
We are introducing our new featured artists today. First up is Jill Shaddock. Jill is a graduate of the 3D Design programme at Manchester Metropolitan University and has been chosen by The Crafts Council to join their 2013 Hothouse scheme.
Jill’s vessels are created from formers that are turned on a lathe, using a method called slipcasting. Liquid clay is coloured with a combination of stains, poured into the mould and left to form a skin within the mould. This process is long and can sometimes mean that Jill has to have fifteen moulds on the go at once.
We love the resulting layering and feel that these vessels are both decorative and functional.
We stock a selection of Jill’s work; single vessels from £16 – £40 and multi-vessel pieces such as Trio (£75) or the Sushi set which retails at £100.
Hannah popped in this morning to deliver more felt robins and we got to talking about how artists find out about opportunities to show/sell their work. And we ended up thinking that it would be great to provide that opportunity here at the Studios. We’re thinking a monthly get together; a bit show & tell with our new work and a bit networking.
What do you think?
Pop over to our Workshop page to see the incredible line up of workshops for the first three months of 2013. Workshops include ‘Introduction to Spinning’, ‘Beginners Felt Making’, ‘Dry Needle Felting’, jewellery and textiles with Adele Kime and a new theme from Ingrid Karlsson-Kemp, ‘Rhythm of the Stitch’.
So make 2013 the year you learn something new, not only do you get to work with and learn from our inspirational artist tutors but there is always lots of fun (& cake!).
