Our name did not arrive by accident. Central to our project is the provision of affordable studio space for artists and craft makers in Glossopdale. The ground floor of the building will be our studio space and will house a kiln. The space has great potential and there are amazing doors which open out into the courtyard.
Cathy Carr of Catherine Carr Glass will be moving in soon, making The Smithy Studios her permanant home. Artists, crafts people and groups will be able to book space in the studio for regular or occasional usage – we will post the details soon, but if you are interested contact us at email@example.com.
These are the wonderful wooden doors opening out into our courtyard.
We have had fantastic weather these last few days. And the view from our ‘balcony’ has been breathtaking – just look at those hills…
It is possible that the building work and car park don’t do them justice! But… in a couple of months the footpath between Smithy Fold and car park (which is free) should be re-opened, so very convenient for a little shopping!
We have been hard at work, here’s a glimpse…
and here’s our newest aquisition (a big thank you to May)…
We are really pleased that our first booking is from the Glossop Fibre Arts Co-operative. They are running a Silk Painting Workshop at the Studios in May – here are the details…
Thurs 19th May, 12-3pm at The Smithy Studios, 1 Smithy Fold, Glossop, SK13 8DD
£12 (glossopmoot* co-operative members)/£18 – plus cost of materials (estimated at £2 – £3)
In a small group (8 maximum), learn how to paint on silk using the ‘gutta’ technique of drawing a design. The image is then painted with iron fixed paints. Bring along your own ideas, or use designs provided by the tutor. Take home your own hand made card in glowing colours. All materials are provided. The technique can be adapted for painting silk scarves, suncatchers, or pictures, and the workshop is fine for complete beginners. The workshop will show you how to mount your design into a card – you can see examples on the workshop page of the co-ops blog http://www.glossopmoot.wordpress.com/
There are 8 places on this workshop – please email firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a place. Your place will be secured on receipt of your payment for the workshop.
We can’t believe our luck. We have been working together in our local fibre arts co-operative glossopmoot for the past couple of years and every now and then we would bemoan the fact that the co-op had nowwhere to meet or to hold workshops, comment on the frustration of not being able to buy our materials locally. And now, here we are. The lease has been signed. We are meeting reps, talking to workshop facilitators, building our website and generally planning our next steps.
We are very excited and hope that you will be too. There was a wonderful article in the High Peak Review which arrived today with a great photo of Cathy and Carole outside The Smithy Studios (thank you Penny).
We plan to open in early May – why not pop back to see our progress or subscribe and be the first with the news.
See you soon!
